Interning physically is not always affordable, and thus virtual internships are very beneficial. Last Fall, I applied to virtually intern for USAID’s WA-WASH program, which has a partnership with FIU. My work has consisted of translating and editing executive summaries from Spanish to English, and creating project reports. I have been able to learn from this the different approaches and technologies that are being used in the field to tackle the lack of clean water in the communities of Western Africa. Much of what I have learned consist of the role that organizations and governments have in empowering communities to handle and care after their water supply, and not creating a habit of dependence. This is information has enriched me in learning from an inside perspective how work in the field is executed, the obstacles faced, and the long lasting impacts.
